Poignant Circa 1790's Hand Painted Mourning Brooch/Pendant

Item #043J

Circa 1790's and lovingly protected for over two centuries in it's original handmade leather silk lined box, this darling Georgian hand painted mourning or memorial brooch is a rare and desirable catch for any collector. Beautifully painted in muted earthy tones on ivory and mounted in gold with a rock crystal cover, the navette shaped brooch/pendant measures 40mm x 24mm and can be worn as either a pendant or brooch. Many lives were lost at sea over the centuries, and the anchor and setting with sea and cliffs in the background tell a sad tale of waiting for a loved one to return. This touching memento echoes a love tragically lost over four generations ago and as such deserves a loving and caring new protector.

This poem by Rose Hartwick Thorpe captures the sentiment so perfectly;

'I stood where the starlit heavens
Spread away over field and glen
Like the hands of loving angels
Reaching down to the hearts of men.

And the sea, with a glow, reflected
The infinite lights above;
The quivering resplendent heavens
All smiling with peaceful love.....'
