Scarce Berlin Iron 56 Inch Guard Chain

A collectable and scarce seen antique 'Berlin' Iron longuard chain with pretty ellipse shaped floral panels and a dog clip with which to customise the look by wrapping the chain or to hold a favourite locket or pendant. It's dark, matt surface holds a story which began in the early 1800's when the Prussian royal family urged it's citizens to donate their gold to fund the war against Napoleon. In exchange for their gold, citizens were given 'Berlin' Iron jewelry, sometimes inscribed with Gold gab ich für Eisen (I gave gold for iron) and wearing the black, intricately designed Berlin Iron became a symbol of patriotism whilst wearing gold became passé and inappropriate. The giving of iron jewelry in exchange for gold, to fund a war effort was tried again in the First World War, and we believe this piece dates to that time.

Measures 56 inches.
