Victorian Whitby Jet Ammonite Fossil Brooch

Inspired by the writings of Darwin and the great rush of interest in fossils, this Victorian Whitby Jet brooch has been hand shaped to frame an ancient Ammonite fossil. Circa 1870's, this interesting piece would likely have been bought as a souvenir when visiting the English seaside town of Whitby. Famous for this local Jet which was found in seams along the coast, many workshops existed at the time dedicated to hand carving this most wonderfully glossy mineral into jewels.

Measures an inch and a half across and closes with the original 'C' clasp.
