An Interesting Antique Hardstone Cameo Ring of Aristotle

A significant and meaningful antique hand carved nicolo Onyx cameo ring with fabulous Acanthus repoussé detailing. Hand engraved with a personal dedication to the inner band: ‘Edward Talbot to J.E. Mace Gratitude.'

Every piece which passes through our hands holds a story, but this was too intriguing a mystery to put aside, so we decided to research the story. Evidently a men’s ring (due to the size) and as the inscription tells, a gift from one to the other with ‘Gratitude’ this was not your everyday event. It became apparent that these two gentlemen were members of the Unitarian Church in Tenterden, England and as such believed in Universalism and the benefits of education as a step to encourage opportunities and equality for the 'common man'. 

It is so fitting that a bust of Aristotle graces the centre; this philosopher associated with the natural sciences and ideas of reflection within our lives and the exercising of goodly works. 

We have enjoyed researching this piece, rich with personal memories, interests and significance. Aside from the very cool looks of this ring, it is a collector's piece as such as it will not withstand daily wear and so we are looking for a new home in which this meaning and history can be appreciated.
