A beautiful and very striking antique Georgian era Specimen Scottish Agate riviere style necklace, displaying graduated ovals of highly polished cabochon-cut indigenous Scottish Agates which would have been found on the shores and hillsides, these linked by sections of 9ct Gold links.
The great variety of natural patterns and colours are shown in their wonderful earthy contrast; Each corresponding section hand carved from a different species of Agate; we're not sure if we can identify them all or the locations they come from, but do recognise russetty Moss Agate and orange hued Carnelian; and possibly Jaspagate from Burn Anne in Ayrshire.
'Pebble' jewellery was very interesting to Georgian society; minerology and geology being popular pastimes for the well-to-do. And interesting stones would oft be picked up on visits to the seaside and other places of note, polished to show their distinctive markings and mounted by local jewellers for the individual customer.
This is an unusual and striking piece, the graduation of the stone sizes flatters the shape of the neck beautifully and all is pleasingly harmonious.
Stones: mixed Sottish Agates
Metals: 9ct Gold (tested but unmarked)
Length: measures 15 inches as is so lies just around the base of the neck closing with a gorgeous handmade Carnelian set oval box clasp.
