A gracefully hand carved shell profile portrait of the Goddess Selene, shown with a Moon in her hair and mounted in a frame of 9ct yellow Gold dating, we believe to the latter 19th century. Classically harmonious, the Cameo would most likely have been carved by one of the Cameo artisans in Rome who for centuries have been famed as experts, and mounted in Britain. This is such a beautiful classical theme and particularly so as symbolising feminine energy, as in ancient Greek mythology and religion, Selene is the goddess of and personification of the Moon.

The Cameo itself measures 3cm by 2.5cm. The chain shown is Gold plated Silver and measures 18 inches. The Cameo herself a touch over an inch.
