A very interesting and fine quality mourning ring in memory of Caroline Giesler of Hampstead, London. This piece is entirely hand crafted with decorative buckled enamel work to the shoulders (symbolic of holding her close) and a beautiful centrepiece intaglio heraldic crest depicting a bull framed by a buckled surround with the legend 'NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE' meaning neither rashly nor timidly.

This is possibly the crest for the Bulkeley family, although we can ascertain no link to that name at present...

The Bulkeley family crest, or coat of arms, features a black shield with a silver chevron between three silver bull's heads cabossed (shown full-faced). The crest, above the shield, depicts a silver bull's head, with gold horns, emerging from a gold ducal coronet. The motto is "Nec temere nec timide," which translates to "Neither rashly nor timidly".

There is a hand engraved dedication: 'Caroline Giesler obt 19 JanY 1862 aet 84'

Marked inside the band alongside the hallmark is the maker's mark for John Figg who is described (in Jackson's Hallmarks) as producing 'very fine and often interesting work'.

We have researched the history of this lady (the ring was purchased from a descendent of Caroline along with other family rings) and found that she was born Caroline Norvell in Plympton in Devon in 1778. She married Cark Friedrich Giesler (a Goldsmith and sometime Furrier it seems) in 1799 and the couple had three children.

To give a flavour of the wealth of this family: one of the addresses they lived at in London is now the Hilton Hotel on Upper Woburn Place! She left today's equivalent of £7 million in her will.
