A fascinating and very lovely vintage ring in a perennially pretty design and showcasing a gorgeous and magical mauvey-lilac-blue Ceylon Sapphire accented by tiny antique rose-cut Diamonds to the shoulders.
Very special and charming, all is hand crafted with delicate touches to the feature double clawed setting and shoulders and it dates we believe (as the band is of 9ct Gold) to the 1940's as in wartime the Utility rules meant there was rationing, including rationing of gold and only 9ct Gold was allowed for jewels.
Ceylon Sapphires are renowned for their bright, vivid cornflower blue colour and clarity. In this case the unusual plump cushion shape of the Sapphire has dictated the cute shape of the whole ring and is sure sign that all is hand crafted. Over the years we have seen a number of rings with indigenous gemstones originating in the Ceylon (Sri Lanka) particularly Ratnapura district, stones often found in 'gravel' bearing riverbeds which were at that time small scale local businesses.
The 1940s saw continued production of high-quality, vibrant blue "Ceylon sapphires". Notably, massive, high-quality stones were being found, such as those that would later be cut into famous gems, following significant finds in the 1920s-1940s period.
The charmingly hand faceted lilac tinged Sapphire measures at 8.8mm by 8mm and its weight is 3.70ct. It has been unset and assessed at GCS Gemmological Services and a certificate accompanies this piece. It states that the Sapphire is natural with no signs of heat treatment.
Entirely unique, this ring is a very special find and precious in all the story it holds. Ethically sound as a choice as all is recycled and original with so many aspects of interest to admire.
