This Penannular style brooch is fitted with a silver pin which slides around the outer gallery so that it can be pinned in different ways. This type of brooch is generally worn to fasten a plaid or cloak. The design dates back many centuries and is typical of Celtic jewellery in the pre-Roman period. This revival piece dates to around the 1870's/80's when interest in this type of jewellery was sparked by discoveries of ancient jewels such as the Tara Brooch and the Hunterston Brooch in the mid 19th century.
Hand engraved to the terminals with thistles to one side and letters in a Celtic style font to the other. Many Victorian jewellery pieces were not hallmarked and that is the case with this brooch. It measures two inches across and is worn with the pin piercing the (tartan) fabric and the ring moved around to act as the fastener.
