We are most pleased to offer you this handsome antique 9ct Gold and Carnelian intaglio style signet ring dating to 1870's and with perhaps a hint of the Gothic Revivalist style advocated by Augustus Pugin which was tremendously fashionable at the time. At a time when well-to-do 'men of thought' questioned the intellectual and social mores of the day and sought to develop a more enlightened conscience based on reason and the works of classical philosophers, a ring such as this would represent your questing intent.

Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, endings, transitions, and doorways, is depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. In this case shewn casting eyes to heaven which may show an even more questing intention as he was the gatekeeper to this other world. It is believed that the first month of the year January is named for him.

A compelling and tangible piece of artistic history, this ring has a hallmark (sans date year unfortunately) applied at the Birmingham Assay Office alongside the maker's mark for Samuel Usher of Vyse St in Birmingham's famed jewellery quarter.

Fashioned in gentle 9ct Gold with splayed shoulders balancing the angularity of the design perfectly all has been hand crafted to home the superior hand carved intaglio; the finely balanced shape of the antique signet ring flattering the hand nicely. All accompanied by the smoothness of the gleaming Gold it makes for a wonderful familiarity.

Stones: Russet Carnelian, an indigenous 'pebble' gem oft found in the Highlands of Scotland

Metal: 9ct Gold with a full hallmark applied at the Birmingham Assay Office. It weighs .... grams

Ring Size: T or 9.5 but could be altered somewhat to suit.

Measurements: the stone measures 15mm lengthways

The box shown is simply for display but a nice quality velveteen lined box will accompany this piece.
