An antique Victorian necklet of beautiful hand faceted Pyrope Garnet beads (famously mined at Meronitz in the North Western Czech Republic previously known as 'Bohemia)', each sweetly hand faceted, juicy as a pomegranate pip!
Adorable! A deep blood red, the Garnets cast a sparkle from their shiny surfaces and set the scene of rich velvets and dark looks so beloved of the time. The beads themselves are a quirky bunch and each has its own shaping giving the most charming individuality to the whole (we can only imagine the hours it must have taken to work the whole piece). It is freshly rethreaded and the shortest row measures at 22 inches and the longest at 26 inches fastened. Lovely quality, the handmade clasp of is prettily shaped set with further Garnets each hand faceted in the 'rose' style.
An article in the "Journal of the Society of the Arts" August 25, 1892, states that at that time there were over 3000 cutters working in 500 shops in the Bohemian garnet industry. Read further about the history and geology of Bohemian Garnets here.
