An enchanting antique Victorian enamelled memorial or mourning ring, with a precious rock crystal topped locket compartment containing a plaited section of the beloved's hair. The inside of the band is dedicated to 'W Noton', and the black enamel work is worked into the scrolling carved 18ct gold mount.
The feel of this beautiful ring on the finger is warm and affectionate; the smoothness of the 18ct yellow gold is very touching, as it has become that way by wear. It is hallmarked in Birmingham for 1857, with the most wonderfully clear young Victoria head hallmark, which is in itself a joy to see. The maker's mark is 'E.D.W', for Edward Dunwoody Wilmot who worked in the Hockley area of Birmingham (the Jeweller's quarter).
The condition is very good, some tiny scuffs to the enamel and glass under the loupe, but nothing serious.
The finger size is 'O/7/14/54', but cannot be adjusted.
