Georgian Silver Filigree Maltese Cross Pendant

A Gothic dream, we have here an unusual and rare perfectly preserved Maltese Cross pendant of hand crafted Silver Filigree work. Dating to the early 19th century and entirely hand crafted with a neat and skilled precision, this piece dates earlier than most of the pieces we have handled. The background to this piece includes the fact that in 1813-14 Malta officially became a colony of the British Empire and this was celebrated this in many ways, wearing jewellery being one of those.

Exquisitely fine Filigree work is a traditional craft in Malta being worked by skilled artisans in workshops in the towns and villages. This astonishing example is a rare survivor of two centuries and we must say that the work is of the most superior quality!

Filigree is a time consuming and exacting art; tiny milled strips of Silver are cut and shaped then soldered together into shapes including flowers such as the sweet Roses which ornament the tips and centre of this olden Maltese Cross. 

Metal: Silver, tested but unmarked.

Measurements: it measures two inches across and including the Silver cable link chain which measures 17 inches.
