Mounted in 15ct Gold, this sensitively hand painted portrait of a fox was made by William Bishop Ford (1832-1922) a renowned miniaturist working in the 19th century. With a locket compartment to the backpiece, this wonderful jewel could make a really fabulous gift. The exquisite fineness of the execution has entirely captured our hearts and we are loath to let this piece go.
Signed to the reverse with an enamelled signature and the date we believe is 1866. Measures 19mm across. The pendant loop is a newer addition and we imagine this piece was once a cravat or stickpin. In great condition to the front with just one tiny mark to the enamel just below the nose. The enamel to the reverse shows loss.
From the British Museum: 'William Bishop Ford , painter of enamel miniatures (1832-1922), was a pupil of the miniaturist William Essex, whom he assisted at the studio at 3 Osnaburgh, Regent's Park in the 1850s and 1860s. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1854 for over 40 years'.
