Rare Georgian Repousse Rococo Garnet Ring

In the Rococo Revival style, we present this unusual and scarce cabochon Garnet Carbuncle ring. Hand crafted, this piece dates to the very early 19th century around 1820 when a romantic revivalist style was influencing design all over Europe. Somewhat in the style of Episcopal rings worn by the clergy which oft show a Garnet to symbolise the blood of Christ and thus offer protection, this was a time when folks of art and thought who could afford to wore more decorative rings to express their inclination.

Echoing historical jewels down the centuries, the oval Pyrope Garnet is ornamented to the gallery with exquisite repousse gold work which was fashionable at the time and shows Roses and Acanthus leafery (representing Love and Rebirth and is oft seen in Classical art). These rings were commonly filled with shellac so the outside is a layer of 18ct gold that has been pressed on to a mould to obtain the design.

100% original and worthy of a place in a museum, this ring captures much that was then admired in a gorgeous flowing, elaborate and naturalistic design which is beautifully complete. You'll likely never see another the same. 

Stone: cabochon Garnet (carbuncle)

Metal: 18ct yellow Gold pressed over a shellac base. Tested but unmarked as was custom at the time. 

Ring Size: P or 7.5 as is but unsuitable for alteration due to the continuous design around the shank.

Measurements: 11.8mm at the centre front and 3.6mm at the back. This ring is bulky and wide to the sides.
