A Gothic dream, we have here an unusual and rare perfectly preserved Maltese Cross necklace of hand carved English Whitby Jet. A fossilised wood of the Araucaria tree which was laid down in ancient Jurassic forests and collected from the beaches around Whitby in Yorkshire, England, being worked in workshops in the town.
Having worked with Whitby Jet over 25 years, this one lies close to our hearts. It is a rare survivor and we must say that the Jet is of the most superior quality!
Dating to the early 19th century and entirely hand crafted with a neat and skilled precision, this piece dates earlier than most of the pieces we have handled which were created during the 1870's/80's at the height of the Whitby boom.
In 1813-14 Malta officially became a colony of the British Empire and this fact was celebrated this in many ways, wearing jewellery being one of those.

Stone: English Whitby Jet.
Measurements: it measures 4.5cm across and including the beautifully shaped bale measures 6.3cm.
