Victorian Pompeii Souvenir Lava Brooch in 15ct Gold

A charming and inspiring antique Lava cameo brooch dating to the mid 19th century and likely chosen as a souvenir when on the Grand Tour in Italy. This piece does have a small amount of damage to the nose and neck in the first buff coloured cameo, but we can overlook this as it is only really seen on very close inspection and because of the scarcity and quality of the piece. In honour of the Classical tradition and jewels found at historical sites in Italy and exhibited in Museums, such pieces were said to be carved of Lava from Pompeii near to Naples. The four Maidens are nicely carved and were most usually set back in the UK on return from your trip.

Measures 4.5 cm across and fastens with a traditional 'C' clasp all in 15ct yellow Gold which was a standard used solely in Britain between 1854-1932.
