Scarce Find! Vintage Black Magic Opal Ring

A stunning vintage Black Opal ring which we are pleased to offer, an unusual and harmonious creation. This antique ring dates to the Edwardian era around 1920 and would have been a most exciting jewel to own as Opals had only been making their way to Europe since the 1890's and were quite the latest excitement. 

Black Opal is a scarce and magical type of Opal that has a dark body tone, ranging either grey or black and caused by the presence of carbon and iron oxides. This dark background makes the gem's internal 'play-of-colour' - its vibrant, shifting colours - appear even brighter and more dramatic. Considered the rarest and most valuable form of Opal, high-quality Black Opals are prized for their vivid, non-directional colour patterns and intensity. This phenomenon has only ever been found in a few locations in the world and we can say that this stone is doubtless from Lightning Ridge in Australia's great Opal fields of New South Wales. It has the most splendid play of colour (which just doesn't show in photographs) with very strong glowing reds and oranges. 

The beautifully refined design is hand crafted in 18ct yellow Gold and fine Platinum with delicately modelled fleur de lys style shoulders in the two contrasting colours of metal. A true delight and a scarce find. 

Stone: natural Black Opal with a natural 'potch' layer which can be seen from the back as was common at the time but is nowadays used to create doublets or triplets. 

Ring Size: N or 6.75 as is and could be altered the smallest amount for fit
