A fine antique triple layered hardstone Carnelian cameo which we believe to be of the Roman Emperor Domitian (AD 51-96).
Domitian was the last emperor of the Flavian dynasty, succeeding his brother Titus. He is known for his extensive building projects, including temples, a stadium, a forum, and a palace, as well as adding a level to the Colosseum. Significant wars were fought in Britain, including gains in an attempt to conquer Caledonia (Scotland).
In the classical laureate profile, the carving is most likely Italian and dating to the Renaissance Revival period 19th century; but may be earlier... there are similar Cameos in the British Museum and the MET Museum.
The delicacy of the carving is remarkable. Notice how the top layer is gorgeously speckled and worked cleverly against the dark russet coloured background which contrasts with the bluey/lilac layers above through which the profile portrait is hand carved.
Please note there is damage to the nose.
Mounted in a solid custom made 9ct Gold setting which likely dates to around the 1970's, and so is a remount. The ring size is an 'R' or '8.5' and the whole weighs 10.67 grams and the Cameo measures 21.15mm by 16.03mm
