A rare and beautiful antique hand cut Diamond cluster ring somewhat in a Gothic taste with finely enamelled decoration to the shoulders. A somewhat formal, sombre and studious mood prevailed at the time when artists looked back to the Medieval period for inspiration... a ring such as this, as an artefact, captures that reflection...
The 19th century witnessed a period of rapid industrialization and urban expansion, which brought with it a loss of cultural identity and a sense of disconnect from the past. Augustus Pugin emerged as a prominent figure advocating for a return to the architectural traditions of the Middle Ages, believing that the Gothic style embodied the religious, moral, and aesthetic values of a bygone era. He sought to capture the grandeur and spirituality of medieval buildings in his own designs.
Canonbury Antiques
Mounted with seven old hand cut Diamonds, each plumper and with a more glinty fire than seen in modern cut Diamonds, this type of crown setting (which saw its evolution from a Mediaevalist quatrefoil inspiration seen in the Gothic Revivalist jewels) holds the amazing olden mine cut Diamonds allowing maximum light to catch every facet in a rolling glitter. So many hours of contemplative work has gone into the crafting of this ring!
Similar rings are shown in the book 'Rings 1800-1910' by Verlaine Davies. The distinctive features are the setting, the spatula shaped shoulders and enamelled engraving.
Stones: Antique hand cut natural Diamonds measured at around one carat judged in the setting with a Schindler Gauge. The centre stone has a 'natural' cleave chip visible in our images.
Ring Size: P or 7.5 as is, there is evidence of a previous sizing
Metal: 18ct Yellow Gold tested but not stamped. We have had the black enamel work restored by our skilled enameller.
